Topaz Lyon is the musical moniker of Alaia Harvie.  Australian-born to Californian parents, Alaia (‘a-lay-ah’) spent her childhood on the east coast of northern New South Wales – up in the mountains inland from Byron Bay –  surrounded by nature, the steep cliffs, the seasonal waterfalls and the sounds of the creatures in this part of the world.

Whilst easily romanticised, these aspects yet affect her songwriting, which offers a link with the natural and ethereal world, whilst at the same time connecting with love, loss, truth-seeking and the ebb and flow of existence.

Musically influenced by alt-country story-telling songwriters like Bob Dylan, Gillian Welch & Lucinda Williams, her style also takes notes from indie artists such as Joanna Newsom, Lisa O’Neil, Cat Power.

In previous years, she played solo and in a 3 piece, as Ichabod’s Crane, playing gigs in Brisbane, Melbourne & along the Australian east coast, at music festivals and even in a little bar in Tokyo. After an 8-year hiatus from song-writing, she penned the tracks on Luminescent in late 2019-2020, then recorded near her childhood home in 2021.

As the awareness of the world shifts and expands, and our individual vision is illuminated and juxtaposed with those around us, it seems there could be no better time to revisit soul expression through the language of art and music.
